We recently caught up with Hayley, our new Head of Governance, to find out more about what brought her to Havencare and what she’s most looking forward to in her role.

What was it about Havencare that stood out to you?

Havencare’s mission immediately resonated with me on a personal level. Before discovering Havencare, I wasn’t aware of the incredible support organisations that exist for people with learning disabilities and autism. Having a family member with autism, I’ve often thought about what the future might look like for him and the opportunities available to help him live a fulfilling life.

What really stood out to me, though, was the culture. There is a real sense of purpose, energy and ambition across the organisation. It feels like Havencare is entering an exciting phase of growth and development, driven by people who genuinely care about making a difference. I could see myself being part of that journey and contributing to something meaningful.

What do you find most fulfilling about your work?

Throughout my career, I’ve worked across a variety of sectors and roles, but governance has become a real passion of mine. It’s often seen as something that happens behind the scenes, yet it plays a crucial role in helping organisations operate effectively and achieve their goals.

What I find most rewarding is seeing the positive impact of that work. Whether it’s improving a process, introducing a new way of working, or supporting a project from idea to implementation, it’s incredibly satisfying to hear colleagues recognise the difference good governance has made and the value it brings to the organisation.

What impact do you hope to make through your work?

I am passionate about improving systems, processes and ways of working. At Havencare, I see a real opportunity to strengthen the foundations that support the charity’s ambitions, making it easier for colleagues to focus their time and energy on delivering excellent services.

For me, good governance is about creating the conditions for success. By putting strong structures and processes in place, we can help the organisation grow sustainably, reach more people, and ultimately ensure that more individuals receive the support they need to live the lives they choose. That’s what makes the work worthwhile.
