At Havencare, we believe in people and what’s possible when they’re given the right support. For Choice, the support of her team helped her turn a cover contract into a Practice Leader role.

Choice joined Havencare in 2025 as a Support Worker, supporting people with learning disabilities and autism. From the beginning she took time to recognise the needs and interests of the different people she supported, whether that was going to watch Plymouth Aryle play football, trying new recipes or joining the local choir.

It wasn’t long before her warmth and commitment was recognised:

“Very early on, it was obvious there was real potential for progression,” recalls her manager, Hayley.

With encouragement from colleagues, Choice applied for a Practice Leader role and was selected just seven months after joining Havencare.

As a Practice Leader, Choice works primarily alongside Anna (name changed). She supports her with everyday tasks but also encourages her to pursue the things in life which bring joy. Together they have shared some great moments, from parties and trips to the horse races, to shopping sprees and Doctor Who marathons.

“My goal is always to make sure Anna (name changed) has a safe, comfortable environment and is able to do all the things she enjoys,” says Choice.

When asked what has helped her grow, Choice points to the people around her.

“At Havencare, there’s a team who supports you,” she says. “We’re there for each other and work together and learn from each other’s skills. I feel really seen and supported by management, the team, and the families of the people I support”.

Area Manager Bethan has recognised “the positive difference Choice makes to the whole team”.

Teammate and Hub Leader Gemma agrees, highlighting Choice’s willingness to step in and help when needed: “Choice is always happy to pick up extra shifts and I love it. We work so well together.”

The encouragement she has received has helped Choice grow in confidence and capability while continuing to support people to live the lives they choose.
