Christmas looks different for everyone. For some, it means mince pies, family time and a break from work; for others, it’s quieter or more complicated. And for people working in social care, it can look a lot like any other workday.
While much of the world slows down and switches on a ‘Christmas Out of Office’, like many industries, Havencare teams continue doing what they do best: providing consistent, person-led support. For this, we are incredibly grateful.
Balancing Personal Traditions with Professional Care
Working through Christmas takes flexibility, understanding, and teamwork. Many colleagues juggle shifts with their own families, children, and traditions. For some, stockings get opened at 4am; for others, Christmas dinner might happen the day before or after.
‘It can be hard to leave your own family to look after someone else’s, but we break up shifts, so they are shorter and ask teams their work preferences to make it fair for everyone.”
A Season Where Support Really Shows Up
For the people we support, the festive season can be mixed. It may be joyful and full of meaningful moments with friends and family, but for some it can bring changes to routine or memories that feel upsetting.
“December and Christmas can be difficult for some of the people we support, it’s an emotive time which can be triggering. We work hard to be there providing the extra support which is needed.”
We are incredibly proud of the way our support workers respond with sensitivity and creativity, shaping the day around each person’s needs.
‘We make Christmas nice for the people we support – playing music, decorating hubs, sharing treats and crackers and being there to listen and support.’
One of our Practice Leaders fondly recalls a spontaneous moment of festive dancing last year. Others talk about cooking, camaraderie and sense of togetherness among colleagues on shift.
These simple, natural interactions are at the heart of how our teams support people — at Christmas and every other day of the year.
