Ally’s 20-Year Journey with Havencare

As Ally marks her 20-year anniversary with Havencare this year, we caught up to reminisce about Havencare 20 years ago and celebrate Ally’s unwavering dedication to making people smile. When Ally first stepped through the doors of Havencare 20 years ago, she never imagined she’d still be here two decades later. We sat down to reflect on her incredible journey, the people who’ve shaped it, and what’s kept her here.

“It’s flown by,” she says, reflecting on her time with Havencare. “So much has changed over the years, I still remember when everything was paper based! One thing that’s never changed is the difference Havencare makes to the people we support… and the fact you can still pop in with someone you support for a cuppa!”

“I was only going to stay a few months…”

Ally joined Havencare after a hiatus from support work and a job at the local dockyard. Reflecting on what brought her back to social care, Ali shared how much she missed supporting people, the sense of purpose it provided and the connection that comes from helping others live independent, fulfilling lives.

One of Ali’s most meaningful memories is of supporting D, the first person she worked with at Havencare. “We had such a journey together, moving out of residential care into the community and then later into a home of his own. I supported D until the end of his life, helping him through the hard times and the good. That kind of connection stays with you.”

Now, 20 years on, Ally continues to make an incredible impact at Havencare, including, most recently, supporting someone through an extended stay in hospital.

Reflecting on what has led her to stay at Havencare for two decades, Ally said:

“This job teaches you so much about people, and about yourself. I suppose it’s the people, the culture and community, putting smiles on people’s faces. That’s what kept me here.”
