Read about how the friendship formed through support can span the years! Seven years after supporting M through a life-changing move, L received a surprise email which sparked an emotional reunion. The following story has been anonymised for privacy.

A Reunion to Remember

Back in 2014 I first met M whilst working as a support worker for a different provider. We bonded over life’s small moments, the big ones too, and support evolved into friendship. M and I often spoke about their aspiration to move to Cornwall, and I was so thrilled to be part of the team that helped make their big move happen, even though it meant our support journey together would end.

Seven years passed but my fond memories of supporting M never faded.

So you can imagine my joy when after joining Havencare, M reached out to reconnect. With help from their current support team, M travelled from Cornwall to Plymouth, and we finally met up for a long-overdue coffee and catch-up.

It was a wonderful albeit emotional reunion. We chatted about M’s life now, their home in Cornwall, and reflected on our time together in Devon. M shared how much the time we’d shared and my support, had meant to them. Hearing that was deeply moving. I hadn’t appreciated the impact I’d had until that moment.

M and I have already made plans to meet again soon. I’m really looking forward to visiting their home in Cornwall and celebrating how far they’ve come.

Friendship at Havencare

M and his former support workers’ story is a timely reminder of the lasting relationships we build in this work, and the friendships that don’t end when a shift does. This International Friendship Day we celebrate the bonds shared between colleagues and the people we support, connections which start with support but grow into friendships that span lifetimes.
