Last week I met up with Andy over a cup of tea to hear about what a typical week in his life looks like.
Andy has been living with Havencare for 17 years, and he doesn’t plan on leaving any time soon… With a grin, he told Hub Leader Gemma, “The only way you’ll get me out of here is in a box.”
Over nearly two decades, he’s become a familiar face in his Plymouth hub and a big part of the local community.
Monday: The Calm Before the Numbers
Andy’s week is built around the things that matter to him: volunteering, church, and time with family and friends. Luckily, I visited on a Monday, Andy’s “chill day”, so he had time to sit down on the hub sofas for a chat and a cup of tea.
Tuesdays and Thursdays
Twice a week Andy takes the mic at the local Community Centre as Bingo Host, calling out the winning numbers. His favourite bingo rhymes are “Heaven’s Gate – 88” and “5 and 9 – the Brighton Line.” When Gemma tried a few calls herself, Andy politely informed her they were outdated.
Wednesday
Family is central to Andy’s life. His mum lives just 500 metres down the road, and they meet weekly for tea. Friends are just as important, and Andy — often the instigator — organises trips to the local pub so everyone can get together for a chinwag and a pint.
Friday
Friday is what Andy calls “Chore Day.” He’s earned the nickname “The Hoarder” among friends, but he’s now winning the war against clutter. With support from the team—Gemma, Hannah, and ”T-Dog”—Andrew has been working through a cleaning rota.
The payoff? “The long-lost bedroom floor has finally made a triumphant reappearance,” he tells me.
New horizons
Looking ahead, Andy hopes to flex his vocal muscles by rejoining the local choir. He’s also planning a trip to Norway with his mum and brother, where they’ll take in the mighty fjords and spend some quality family time together.
The Extra-Ordinary Everyday
Exciting trips to Scandinavia aside, the substance of Andy’s life is found in the everyday: the bingo hall, church, tea, downtime, and the freedom to pursue the things that matter to him. Whether that’s rediscovering the bedroom floor or organising the next trip to the pub with his mates.
Thanks to Andy for your time and chatting with us about your daily activities and adventures! We look forward to seeing you again soon.
